BS 456 Business Policy: Past Questions

Introduction

Here you can find questions asked by previous students.

How do you assess the effectiveness/reliability of your source?

Who made it?

  • Look for citations. How many citations does your source have? And has this source been cited by other people?
  • Regarding companies, look to outside sources to verify any statements made by the company.
  • Check multiple places to see if you can uncover any biases.
  • You can also Google the journal that articles are published in to see if they make their articles go through peer-review before being published.

Use library resources

  • Using the databases you have access to through Baker is the best way to make sure you're finding reliable sources
  • Ask someone! Your instructor or a librarian will be able to help you find out if a source you want to use is trustworthy or not. There's no shame in getting a second opinion.

How do you know what financial information is updated and correct?

Use the databases! Databases allow filtering options, so you can specify that you want resources only from the last 5 years (or whatever specific year range you'd like)

How do we cite information given from the library?

The main things to remember is to cite the article according to your instructor's guidelines (APA, MLA, etc.)

If a librarian helped you find a source, you can just cite the article you found--you don't need to include that a librarian helped you in your citation. Here also is the library's citation guide: https://lib.bakeru.edu/home/citations

Purdue O.W.L. is also a fantastic resource for citation help.

If you are wanting to know how to cite something a librarian told you, you can just cite it like an interview. Make sure you get permission from the librarian first!

What market is Dick's Sporting Good in and how is the future looking for them and their market share?

There are two ways you can look this up. One of then is pulling up Dick's Sporting Good on Company Dossier. Under the Overview, you can find all of the basic information about a company:

Top sources?

What are some current trends in the technology industry?

The best way to find the answer to this is to go to Gale. They have industry reports for every NAICS code!

Questions that I cannot answer and you'll just have to do some research!

What are the key factors for the success of Lincoln Electric's management system, and how can these principles be applied to other companies looking to improve their organizational performance and employee engagement?

  • While I cannot directly answer this question, I can encourage you to research it. I would first try ABI/Inform and searching "Lincoln Electric" + the different keywords from your questions "management system," "organizational performance," and "employee engagement." Then I would try Gale.
  • Something else you could try is reaching out to a representative of the company and seeing what they have to say. Interviews with professionals are valid sources for your papers, so if you can talk to someone who works at the company, I'm sure they'd have an answer for you!

What are the best ways to earn passive income as an adult? What are the most successful industries to start a company in?

  • For most successful companies, I would go to Gale and look at their industry reports.
  • For passive income, the obvious answer is inherited wealth. The less (and potentially less ethical) answer is that the best way to earn a passive income is having someone or something else do the work for you.
