The Library Information Science Minor: Intro to LIS

Information about the Library Information Science Minor at Baker University.

Introduction

This class provides a dive into library science. Students will learn the history of libraries, what libraries do for their communities, what career options there are in libraries, and be challenged to ponder and discuss abstract ideas like representation and large social issues faced by libraries and library professionals. This will balance abstract theory with practical activities to give students an overview of libraries and library work.

Students will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the four main types of libraries and their functions.
  • Discuss the responsibilities of libraries and librarians and what it means to work with "information."
  • Employ interpersonal and communication skills relevant to working in a service environment.
  • Recognize the basic principles and functions of representing and organizing abstract ideas.
  • Evaluate current practices in the field and formulate ideas for the future.
