The Library Information Science Minor: Information Literacy

Introduction

Information literacy (and specifically teaching information literacy) is an important part of libraries and librarianship. At both school and university libraries, librarians are expected to teach students how to use their available databases and library catalog. Many universities have a reference desk that is regularly staffed so that library professionals can assist students with their research. This class this teach students both theoretical and practical aspects to information literacy.

Students will be able to:

  • Understand the definition and significance of information literacy as the ability to identify, locate, evaluate, and use information effectively (ACRL).
  • Understand the role libraries and librarians play regarding information literacy.
  • Discover opportunities for careers as informational literacy specialists in the field of Library and Information Science.
